Likewise, I am also known to wrong quite often :).  

But, I did find where in the spec. it says to convert an absolutely positioned
inline to block - http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/visuren.html#dis-pos-flo .  That
however does not clear up the issue of what is going wrong here.
