On first look, disabling image loading causes it to revert to normal behaviour;
either it's something specific about the site/css, or it's something about the
images themselves and size calculations.

Specifically, it looks like the homepage's "most recent photos" block is
responsible for the problem; this is using a marquee tag with a percentage
width set; containing a table with a percentage width set.  Probably something
about the marquee tag.

(people still use the marquee tag???)
