Compiles with ToT

This patch is done sort of from scratch. It is not complete, but does a lot of
useful things already.
Although it is not complete I am attaching it already since I am away tomorrow
and someone may want to shark it (Eric?) :) I should be able to easily finish
it sunday. Also note that it should help with bug 11908.
