The slow left hand menu is caused by the Flash file in the background. Removing
this instantly speeds up rendering.

The "hero" picture covering the second from left menu is fixed by specifying 
position:relative on the menu and z-index:15 (or above).
Alternate is specifying z-index:-1 on the wvHero picture.

So it appears to be a z-ordering problem.
