Taking this out of the review queue. I need to do some more benchmarking (found
some cases where it didn't work quite so well), so I'm going to split this up
into two. One patch that adds the convenience (no extra cost since we're
already paying for it anyway) and a separate patch/bug for the optimization
itself.
