Thanks for the comments. 

I have updated the patch for WAP_INPUT_FORMAT as per the review comments. 
Few other changes made are,
 - handling of automatically inserting escape characters   
 - invalid input/format call back is platform specific only if they implement.
Otherwise behavior is like normal
