I can not detect a single ChangeLog for this patch.  You'll definitely need
that before landing.  Also, when you do add it I think it should document,
extensively, what you've done.	This is just too big a patch otherwise.  In
fact, it probably makes sense to break this patch up quite substantially before
landing.  I'll let others weigh in on that.  Of course, before embarking on
this work I'd probably wait for a decision one way or another what steps need
to be taken, all else being equal, for this port to land in theory.
