take a look at this and let me know if it's more like what you had in mind, as
far as adding/removing the event listener.  i wanted to get feedback on this
approach before finishing it.

i'm still looking into the other questions, and trying to figure out why
exactly NSTreeController is making the calls it does.  maybe someone could just
walk over and ask them? :)
