Okay ideally this should be returning what it is returning in TOT however doing
that would require changes elsewhere in the code.  Ideally we shouldn't be
doing this sort of transform in the paint method.. however this is a similar
problem in text which implies that we need to work out how these should be
redesigned to work more sanely.
