Accelerated compositing in 1.8.x is non-functional. There is
full-support in the ongoing 1.9.x series (improving as the version
numbers increase) and it should be fully polished by the time that the
next stable version is out. It will require GLX. I hope to have EGL /
OpenGL ES support for the stable release following.
