I forgot to mention (quoting the ChangeLog):

    As an additional commodity, the new environment supports the
    GStreamer gst-build-based workflow. Just set the GST_BUILD_PATH
    environment variable to your gst-build path. This feature was
    contributed by Thibault Saunier.
