Per an off-list discussion, one needs to click "输入法" or the arrow next to it and then you can select 拼音 first. After that, an IME UI appears - although it seems unstable - I get it sometimes, but not every time for whatever reason. The technology is quite impressive.
This page disables non-ASCII input sources in Firefox, and I wouldn't call it a good idea. I could search for Russian words (almost) fine in Safari, but not in Firefox. One problem with Russian was that I couldn't type letters that are located on the same keys as punctuation on U.S. layout, due to the page handling them from keydown to produce CJK punctuation. It would've been perfect if it used keypress for that.
